Inner Istria from Pula: Motovun, Grožnjan and Truffles — Which Trip?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 4 min read
The answer first. Choose the guided inner-Istria trip with a food tasting if nobody wants to drive or your day revolves around wine and truffles. Drive independently when choosing the villages and stopping for as long as you like matters more than commentary.
What the guided option gives you
The bookable day trip starts at €92 and packages transport, a guide and a tasting into one plan. That removes parking and route decisions and lets everyone taste without nominating a driver. Check the current meeting point, languages, exact stops and inclusions on the booking page: “inner Istria” does not by itself promise both Motovun and Grožnjan.
A tour also fixes the pace. That is useful on a first visit, but less attractive if you want a long lunch, photography stops or a quiet walk beyond the main street. Tastings vary, so confirm what is included rather than reading “food tasting” as a full meal.
When a car is better
An independent day works well for travellers who want to combine one hill town with a small producer or countryside lunch. It also gives you an easy escape from crowded streets. The costs are not just fuel: check parking, any road charges and the rental agreement before setting out.
Motovun’s elevated historic centre and Grožnjan’s compact lanes are not places to assume you can park beside the sight you want. Follow local signs and allow for walking uphill. Opening hours at small producers can change; arrange a tasting instead of arriving on the assumption that someone will be available.
If you prefer that flexibility, compare car hire in Pula, then verify the excess, deposit, CDW scope and road restrictions with the chosen provider.
Our recommendation
For most first-time visitors, the guided inner-Istria trip with a tasting is the simpler choice. Hire a car when the freedom to shape the day is the main attraction, not merely a way to avoid the tour price.
